Jiulong by Monica Taverniti is a hand-painted wooden clock inspired by the walled city of Jiulong (Kowloon), originally located in the Hong Kong region but now destroyed. The small city, founded as a military fort, was surrounded by high walls and became notorious during the second half of the twentieth century due to its extreme isolation and overpopulation.
The clock embodies a concept of time that draws on the constituent elements of any city: space and movement. Its shape maps the corners and stairways of the ancient city, enclosed within the gray walls. The contrasting colors and the labyrinthine shape of the structure recall enchanted castles and primordial worlds, suddenly projected into the present.
